How do you find the right amount of pressure relief with your new mattress?

Finding the right combination of comfort, support and pressure relief in your new mattress can be a daunting challenge.  For many of us it has been years since we last purchased a bed.  Even if you have taken the time to research the various mattress brands, reviewed consumer study group articles, and studied which type of material is right for you it can still be easy to make a mistake.  As a mattress lasts for years, making the wrong choice with your new mattress purchase can come at a great cost.

The feel of the mattress is ultimately subjective and can change from day to day.  In addition, each of our body types vary and the perfect balance of support and pressure relief can be very difficult to accurately gauge. That said, there are some simple but incredibly effective methods to help you find the perfect mattress.

First, and most importantly, it is essential you test your mattress before making a purchase.  Buying a bed online is incredibly challenging, and while there are a select few of us that have no sleep issues you cannot be sure that will be the case 5-10 years down the road.  Taking the time to compare the feels, brands and technologies makes it much easier to determine the best solution for you.  Pressure relief, in particular, is almost impossible to gauge via website product descriptions.

If a bed is too soft you sleep all night, but can wake up with horrid back pain.  If it is too firm you end up tossing and turning all night due to pain and pressure.  A simple rule that works in most cases revolves around your sleep position.  Side sleepers tend to experience better sleep on a medium or soft mattress.  This is due to the fact that side sleepers sleep on less surface area, and pressure and pain can become a significant issue for people that sleep this way.  Back and stomach sleepers tend to perform better on a medium or a firm.  Our bodies react best in our sleep cycles when we are in a relaxed neutral position throughout the sleep surface.

The density and types of foams used in your mattress also play a major role in your quality of sleep.  Many memory foam mattresses use incredibly low density foams.  These foams provide less pressure relief, do not micro adjust to your sleep position as well, and oxidize quickly which leads to dips and sags in your new mattress.  A mattress is worth very little if it feels great for six months before leaving you with large dips and sags. The average American tosses and turns 50+ times a night.  Most of these adjustments are made during our sleep cycles and we do not even notice.  The problem comes as we toss and turn more and more this brings us out of our deeper stages of sleep.  Finding the right level of pressure relief is essential to an exceptional night's rest.  An educated sleep professional that truly understands the intricacies involved in getting a better night's rest can make all the difference.  We encourage you to seek a professional sleep expert who provides a consultative and wholistic approach to improving your quality of sleep.

There are many other powerful techniques and products that can impact how you sleep. It's time that we embrace the impact of sleep, and seek to find natural ways to improve our health.
