If you just started your research for a new mattress, we highly recommend you start by reading our latest mattress buying guide.
The Adapt Medium is the 1st available model in the new Tempurpedic lineup, and a great introduction into the series. Tempurpedic spent a great deal of time redesigning there new line from the ground up, and the Adapt Medium reflects the effort and attention to detail that went into developing the line.
Starting with the high molecular weight yarn, the Adapt Medium instantly provides a sense of cooling comfort. Combining generous layers of the Tempur ES foams along with their original Tempur material, this mattress provides a balanced feel ideal for back or stomach sleepers. While this is a great mattress and comparable to older legacy models, the Adapt Medium used some of their older foams in designing the bed. We noticed quite a bit less conformance and pressure relief while testing this model laying on our sides as compared to the other two collections. One of the greatest benefits of the new Adapt line is the incredible combination of support and pressure relief you feel. We feel the ProAdapt models using the higher density APR foams did a better job providing the right combination of support and comfort.
We recommend this model to those wanting to get into the Tempurpedic lineup and experience the legendary comfort of their mattresses without going into the higher price ranges.
Both models in the Adapt collection come in a Medium feel. Despite the fact the Adapt Medium is an introductory model, it still uses Tempurpedic's soft and contouring Tempur-ES foams. This provides an instant sense of personalized support and comfort. This pressure relief is especially felt when lying on your back or stomach. While the Tempur-ES provides a soft and buoyant feel, the lack of the higher density APR foams inside the bed limits the support and pushback you feel on some of the higher end models. Due to the higher conformance foams not being used their is a markedly firmer feel on your shoulder and hips when you lay down on your side.
The cool to the touch cover uses an ultra high molecular weight yarn that disperses heat at a faster rate than other mattresses. The cover reacts to your body's natural heat and helps dissipate heat away from the heat source (you). We found the cool to the touch feel helped provide a sense of instant coolness, but after about 15 minutes most of this effect had worn off. The good thing here is it take most people between 8-10 minutes to fall asleep. While the cooling cover did not maintain it's feel as long as I'd like, this technology is ideal to help those that need that instant coolness to help them fall asleep. We recommend the Breeze models for those looking for cooling comfort all night long.
Editor's Note: This mattress is a much firmer feel than most other all foam mattresses in this price category. What it lacks in conformance it more than makes up for in the support of the bed. As a back sleeper, I found this mattress to be ideal for my sleep style, especially when combined with an adjustable base.
Tempur-Pedic Innovation Engineers spent years designing this new line, and it is evident right away when testing the Adapt Medium. The cooling cover is a long term design innovation that sets their line apart. The ultra high molecular weight yarn is designed to perfection, and you get to experience this cover in every model across the adapt line.
The SmartClimate dual cover system is a fantastic innovation across the ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt, and for whatever reason was not included in the Adapt models. The SmartClimate cover adds the removable zip off cover and the stretch knit top. The Adapt mattresses are missing this essential feature and for this price point we feel it should have been included. The combination of the Tempur-ES foams and the Original Tempur-material provides a unique feel as compared to any other model, but these foams have been in use by Tempurpedic for many years now. The redesigned APR and APR+ foams found in the Pro and Luxe Series provide a much greater degree of complexity in the feel of the mattress. Overall, while many of the new features have been reserved for the higher end lines the all new cooling cover provides an innovation that is ground breaking in its own right which earns the Adapt medium above average marks in this category.
The Adapt Medium is the only Tempurpedic model in the new line that we feel has limitations for therapeutic use. While it provides a balanced supportive feel and cooling comfort laying on the bed, we found over longer test periods the mattress did not provide the same level of pressure relief and conformance as the higher end ProAdapt or LuxeAdapt series beds. Testing the mattress on your side led to twisting and turning over a few days period that was disappointing. When sleeping on your back or stomach the mattress performed much better in alleviating pressure and reducing tossing and turning. Overall, we felt this model provided above average therapeutic benefits and conforming comfort.
The original tempur material used in the Adapt Medium serves as the primary support layer of the mattress. This foam has been used for decades, and is the most dependable material used in the Tempurpedic line. The Adapt Medium is ideal for back sleepers as it provides contouring comfort in its foam layers more suited to providing relief across a larger sleep surface. For side sleepers and those seeking more complexity in the way the foams adapt to the contours of your body I recommend the ProAdapt or LuxeAdapt models.
The Adapt Medium like every Tempurpedic mattress delivers unparalleled durability as compared to most any other mattress on the market. The Tempur-ES foams and Original Tempur material are both time tested foams that have proven themselves in model after model for decades. This durability is backed by an industry leading 3/4 of an inch impression requirement to make a warranty claim. While the Adapt Medium provides a great warranty it falls short of getting 5 stars due to the higher density foams used in the Pro and Luxe Adapt series. Higher density foams slow oxidation of the foams and improve the overall durability and comfort of the mattress.
Quality is relative with Tempurpedic, and while the Adapt Medium would be considered their "value" mattress, no Tempurpedic comes with a small price tag. This reality limits the value of this mattress compared to other hybrid or all foam models in a comparable price range. As an example, the Sealy Hybrid Silver Chillmattress comes in at a lower price range than the Adapt Medium, and is arguably going to provide a better combination of pressure relief and support for your money.
Editor's Note: As a back sleeper, I would still purchase the Adapt Medium over the Silver Chill Sealy. That said, if you are looking for more conforming comfort in this price range for your hips and shoulders this option could be ideal.
For those that want to experience the quality of Tempurpedic the Adapt Medium is a great mattress that provides balanced and supportive comfort. It is definitely the most utilitarian of the Tempurpedic models, and for those seeking a more therapeutic mattress this mattress could disappoint. We highly recommend if you have specific therapeutic needs to step up to the ProAdapt or LuxeAdapt series as these models are designed for this purpose. That said, if you are looking to upgrade your mattress and want a uniquely balanced feel with the cooling comfort of Tempurpedic's advanced cover this mattress will deliver a great nights sleep for many years to come.
